Gita Pillai, M.D.

Dr. Pillai is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in shoulder, elbow, and sports injuries. Dr. Pillai graduated with a sociology and biology degree from Columbia University in New York City, where she also participated in collegiate softball. She subsequently returned to her home state of Maryland to attend medical school at the University of Maryland, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.

Dr. Pillai completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, New York, under the chairmanship of Evan Flatow, MD, a former president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society. During her residency she was selected by the faculty to serve as chief resident in her final year.

Following residency, Dr. Pillai pursued specialty training as the shoulder and elbow fellow for Dr. Peter McCann and Dr. Frances Cuomo, a former American Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Society president.

Dr. Pillai has authored several textbook chapters and articles in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. In addition, she has presented her research at national meetings. She has also served as an instructor for arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Pillai is the only fellowship trained shoulder and elbow surgeon in southern Delaware. She specializes in shoulder arthroplasty, including both standard and reverse total shoulder replacements, shoulder and elbow fracture care, shoulder arthroscopy, as well as treats sports related knee injuries.

Dr. Pillai is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Delaware Society of Orthopedic Surgeons, as well as the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder & Elbow Society. Dr Pillai has been named a Top Doc by Delaware Today in both orthopedics and sports medicine multiple times, most recently in 2023.  In 2022, Dr. Pillai was named Orthopaedic Division Chief for Beebe HealthCare.
