Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Care
Osteoporosis is a serious healthcare problem. Although it is most common among women approaching or past menopause, it can also affect men and even children, impeding mobility and increasing the risk of non-traumatic fractures. We are committed to the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis — offering, at no charge, heel-ultrasound screening, which may suggest underlying osteoporosis and the need for additional studies. In addition to performing these screenings in our offices, we are also available to offer this service, as well as appropriate counseling, at community health fairs.
Preventable risk factors for osteoporosis include low calcium intake, excessive smoking or drinking, use of thyroid or steroid-based medications (for asthma, arthritis, cancer), postmenopausal without hormone replacement therapy, chronic intestinal disorder, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Some measures you can take to prevent osteoporosis include a diet of calcium-rich foods, taking a calcium supplement with vitamin D, regular weight-bearing exercise such as walking three times weekly for 30 minutes, no smoking, low caffeine intake, alcohol in moderation, and talking to your physician regarding the possibility of Hormone Replacement Therapy if you are post-menopausal, or other options if you are unable to take estrogen. Calcium intake is also very important for men and children.
