Meet Dr. Ed Carroll
Dr. Carroll describes himself as "a blue-collar surgeon." His patients appreciate his down-to-earth manner and wry sense of humor. He especially enjoys treating seniors. "I click with them," he says, "and I get special satisfaction from solving mobility problems caused by aging hips and knees. Making people feel better feels good."
Dr. Carroll and his wife, Theresa, moved to Lewes in October 2004, when he joined OASD. He enjoys spending private time with his family — his wife, his stepson, and a four-year-old yellow Labrador retriever named Riley.
Born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, he was raised in a home where healthcare was an integral part of daily life. His dad, a physician, specialized in internal medicine. His mother was a pharmacist. “My father was one of the old-time docs,” he says. From his father, Ed Carroll learned his old-school, hands-on philosophy of patient care.
Following his graduation from Rochester Institute of Technology, where he majored in engineering and played on RIT’s first NCAA Championship hockey team, he spent several years working for a pharmaceutical company. Then he realized that his true calling was to follow in his father’s footsteps.
He earned his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his general internship at Delaware Valley Medical Center. An orthopedic residency at Frankford Hospital followed. There, he served as Chief Orthopedic Resident in his final year. He also completed a University of Chicago Fellowship in the surgical reconstruction and revision of failed hip and knee replacements.
After joining OASD, Dr. Carroll has become a Board Certified orthopedic surgeon.
In addition to pursuing ducks and large game with his dog, Riley, Dr. Carroll continues to enjoy following ice hockey, and — in quieter moments — reading science fiction.
