Gita Pillai, MD
Arriving August 2011
Dr. Pillai graduated with a sociology and biology degree from Columbia University in New York, where she was a varsity softball player and captain in her final year. She subsequently returned to her home state of Maryland to attend medical school at the University of Maryland, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
Dr. Pillai completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, New York, under the chairmanship of Evan Flatow, MD, a former president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society. During her residency she was selected by the faculty to serve as chief resident in her final year. It was during this training that Dr. Pillai developed her interest in shoulder surgery.
Following residency, Dr. Pillai pursued specialty training as the shoulder and elbow fellow for Dr. Peter McCann and Dr. Frances Cuomo, the current American Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Society president.
Dr. Pillai has authored several textbook chapters and articles in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. In addition, she has presented her research at national meetings. She has also served as an instructor for arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.
Dr. Pillai is the only fellowship trained shoulder and elbow surgeon in southern Delaware. She specializes in shoulder arthroplasty, including both standard and reverse total shoulder replacements, shoulder and elbow fracture care, as well as shoulder arthroscopy and all conditions involving shoulder and elbow pathology and sports medicine.
A Maryland native, Dr. Pillai is excited to return to the area where she grew up vacationing. In her free time she enjoys cooking, running, hiking, playing golf and spending time with her family.
Dr. Pillai will be joining us in August 2011.
