William J. Barrish, M.D.

Dr. Barrish has his roots in Newark, Delaware. He graduated from St. Mark's High School in 1986 and received a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Delaware in 1990. After completing two years of postgraduate education in the field of Neuroscience, he attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia from 1992–1996. While at Jefferson, Dr. Barrish developed an interest in musculoskeletal & sports medicine as well as functional restoration of patients with disabilities.

After returning to Delaware to complete a one year Internship at the Medical Center of Delaware (Christiana Hospital), he and his wife, Susan (also a St. Mark's grad), moved to Dallas, Texas for three years of Residency training in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Baylor University Medical Center. His training in PM&R involved rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries, strokes, amputations, brain injuries, cerebral palsy, and other disabling conditions. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Barrish became very involved at a national level in the file of PM&R. He was elected Chairperson of the Residents' Council for the Association of Academic Physiatrists in 1999. After serving as Chief Resident his senior year at Baylor/Dallas, he completed Residency in 2000.

His training then took Dr. Barrish and his family to Charlottesville, Virginia for Fellowship training in Sports & Spine Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical Center. During his Fellowship training, Dr. Barrish published articles related to running injuries and hip/pelvic injuries in athletes. He was honored as Outstanding Outpatient Instructor for his dedicated service in Resident Education at the PM&R Department of The University of Virginia.

Throughout his training, Dr. Barrish has been very active in the sports medicine community. He has volunteered to serve as medical staff for sports ranging from youth soccer and local 5K runs, to triathlons, marathons, and football at both the high school and collegiate levels.

In professional sports, Dr. Barrish has served as head physician for a minor league soccer team and assistant team physician for the Dallas Burn, a major league soccer franchise.

Dr. Barrish, his wife, and their three children now live in southern Delaware. He enjoys playing golf and is an avid fan of the Washington Redskins and NASCAR.
